 About the season of Pentecost

The season of Pentecost is the longest season of the church year, which is why we have come to call it ‘ordinary time.’  And yet there is nothing ordinary about how this season begins – with the festival of Pentecost – the third major festival of the church year when we celebrate the coming of the Holy Spirit on the disciples and the birth of the church.  The color for this festival is red, but the color for the season of Pentecost is green.  The season of Pentecost is said to be a season of growing, hence the green color and the tree and leaves of the dossal curtain that adorns the sanctuary during this season of the church year.  In the season of Pentecost, we grow in our understanding of how God is at work in the world around us and how we are invited and called into that work. The season of Pentecost continues into the fall where a few minor festivals appear – Reformation Sunday, All Saints’ Sunday and Chris the King Sunday – before we end the church year and walk into the season of Advent.
